If you are considering getting a tattoo, odds are you have at least a few questions you want to ask, but you may be afraid to because you don’t want to make yourself look stupid. When it comes to getting a tattoo, there are no stupid questions. There are actually a wide range of questions many ask before getting a tattoo, especially if it is their first one. Just remember that if you go into a tattoo shop and feel uncomfortable, or the artist or person at the desk makes you feel like you are stupid for asking a simple question, then that may not be the right shop for you. Obtaining a tattoo is not like joining a member’s only club. It is something anyone can do, and you will want to make sure you are comfortable with the process, which means you should feel comfortable enough to ask any question that may come to mind. Here are some of the most popular tattoo questions that may make you feel a little more comfortable the next time you walk into your local tattoo parlor.

Does getting a tattoo hurt?

This is one of the most common questions that nearly everyone asks, and the only way to answer it is honestly. Yes it does hurt, but since each person has a different pain threshold, getting a tattoo may hurt more for some than it does for others. There is a bumper sticker that states “If tattoos felt like orgasms, everyone would have them.” This is pretty much the truth. Go in expecting it will hurt and if it doesn’t than it works out great for you.

Are there certain areas of the body where a tattoo will hurt more than others?
There are most definitely areas of your body where a tattoo will hurt more than others. The level of pain has to do with the amount of fat and muscle that exists over the bone. When choosing the location for your tattoo, you should not base it on the area that will hurt the least. Any tattoo you get is going to hurt, just some may hurt more or less than others. Pick the spot where you want your tattoo and remember that even though you will be in pain for some time, you will have your tattoo for the rest of your life which far outweighs the amount of time you will be in pain.

How much does it cost to get a tattoo?

Since a tattoo is just another form of art, they are most defiantly an expensive undertaking. Do not expect to go into a shop and get a cheap price, unless you want a poorly done design etched on your skin for life. Many tattoo parlors have set prices, so don’t be afraid to ask. It is also quite common for shops to charge by the hour, o to charge more to place a tattoo on specific areas of the body. A custom design will also cost a lot more than a design that is picked out of a book, so keep this in mind before you choose your design.

Is getting a tattoo safe?

This is actually a tricky question. The safety of obtaining your tattoo will depend a lot on the shop you choose. You will want to make sure you pay attention and ask questions about their cleanliness and how they handle the equipment. Does the artist wipe down his area before and after each client? Do the use new needles? Do they autoclave their equipment? How long has your artist been doing tattoos and how long has the shop been in business for? What kind of training does the artist have? Does the artist wear gloves? You will want to make sure you ask all these questions before you choose a shop, and make sure you are completely comfortable with the answers you receive. If not, it’s in your best interest to look elsewhere.

Do I need to tip my tattoo artist?

While tips are always appreciated, there is no set rule on this. If you like the work your artist did, feel free to tip as the decision is totally up to you.
